What We Do
The Los Angeles County + University of Southern California Medical Center is a major metropolitan hospital, serving some of the most underserved patient populations in Los Angeles, CA. Treatment is available to every member of the community regardless of insurance or ability to pay. While this provides healthcare to those who desperately need it, the sheer volume of patients strains all of the hospital's available resources, with as many as 800,000 patients seen annually in the Emergency and Outpatient areas.
In 1969, CARES was founded by Betty Ann Hibbard (Mrs. Lester Hibbard) and Maria Cole (Mrs. Nat “King” Cole) at the request of the Dean of the USC Medical School and the Administrator of the Medical Center.
CARES has since helped to alleviate issues that patients face by providing them with resources to have a better quality experience in the hospital and allow them to focus on what matters most, their health and the health of their loved ones. CARES does this through a variety of different programs including a childcare program, a holiday gift drive, food distributions, reading programs, and much more! CARES also supports the community by providing work study/training programs to allow adults and teens to have the opportunity to explore career interests and pursue academic goals. CARES provides work site training to high school and college students, Cal-Works participants, City and County Summer Youth and After School Employment Programs, and the Senior Employment Training Program.
